As of July 1, 2016, all containers loaded on to a ship to leave a port must include a document declaring its’ verified gross mass (VGM). The option is available to complete the documentation electronically or in paper copy and must accompany the shipment.
These changes from the International Maritime Organization under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention have come into place to encourage safety on board ships and reduce risk. The shipper whose name appears on the bill of lading is responsible for ensuring that the VGM is reported properly.
Buckland is well prepared for this change in requirements and will ensure that there is minimal impact to our customers in regards to these new regulations. Please note that additional costs could be incurred as a result of these new weighing and reporting requirements. If you have questions about the potential impact of this change on your shipments, please reach out to us today.
