In an official Statement on Presidential Proclamation on Thursday, August 6, 2020, the US has announced a 10% tariff on aluminum from Canada.
According to the statement from the United States Trade Representative, this comes as a result of a surge of imports of Canadian aluminum into the US despite a contraction in demand. The 10% tariffs are to be effective as of August 16, 2020, on imports of non-alloyed unwrought aluminum provided for in subheading 7601.10. including 7601.10.3000, 7601.10.6030, and 7601.10.6090.
In response to this, Canada has committed to “swiftly impose dollar-for-dollar countermeasures” in a statement from Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. The details of these countermeasures through retaliatory tariffs will be confirmed after a 30 day consultation period.
