As a result of the ‘Ever Given’ container ship running aground and blocking passage in the Suez Canal this week, the arrivals of over 200 vessels have been delayed. It has been estimated that the efforts to re-float the ship through dredging efforts could take days, up to possibly weeks, which will have substantial impacts on shipments that were anticipated to pass through the Suez Canal during this time frame of the ship becoming lodged and when it will ultimately be cleared.
The Suez Canal had provided some relief for global importers last year to avoid congestion at West Coast ports in the U.S. that added days, if not weeks, to some deliveries from Asia. It is anticipated that this blockage at the Suez Canal will contribute to short-term congestion at West Coast Ports and add to transit times.
