On April 24, 2020, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Lighthizer notified Congress that the United States – Mexico – Canada (USMCA) trade agreement will go into effect on July 1, 2020. This date is one month later than originally proposed. Previously on April 3, Canada and Mexico announced that their countries had ratified the agreement in preparation for USMCA to enter into force. It is called the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) in Canada and Tratado entre México, Estados Unidos y Canadá (T-MEC) in Mexico.
The implementation of USMCA / CUSMA comes after lengthy renegotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) which formally began in 2017.
