September 30, 2024. As of tonight at midnight, strike action is expected to commence at major ports along the US East Coast. Led by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), this strike involves 85,000 workers and will affect 36 major ports. This disruption is likely to impact approximately 70% of all containerized US exports and 56% of US imports, valued at $588 billion in 2023.
Additionally, the Port of Montreal is currently experiencing a three-day strike affecting the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals, which handle about 40% of the port’s cargo volume (approximately 6 million tonnes). The strike, initiated by CUPE Local 375, is scheduled to last until Thursday, October 3, 2024, at 6:59 a.m.
