November 12, 2024. Ongoing labor disputes at the Montreal Gateway Terminals (MGT) and British Columbia’s ports are causing significant disruptions across Canada’s supply chain. Buckland is actively monitoring these developments and will keep you informed on impacts to your shipments.
Port of Montreal: Full Lockout Declared
The Maritime Employers Association (MEA) declared a lockout at the Montreal Gateway Terminals effective 9 p.m., November 10, 2024, after the Montréal Longshoremen’s Union (MLU), CUPE Local 375, voted overwhelmingly to reject the MEA’s contract offer. Consequently, all operations at MGT, including truck, rail, and vessel activities, have been fully suspended until further notice.
The Montreal Port Authority warns of potential economic repercussions and has requested federal intervention. The MLU indicated it would accept the same wage increases offered to unions at other ports (20% over four years), provided its scheduling and work-life balance concerns are addressed.
British Columbia: Ongoing Port Disruptions
In British Columbia, the labor dispute affecting Vancouver and Prince Rupert ports has entered a second week. Negotiations between the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 514 have stalled, with the ILWU expressing frustration over the lack of progress on staffing concerns amid increasing terminal automation.
With limited progress toward resolution, over 100 Canadian organizations have appealed to Ottawa for intervention.
Federal Government Response
Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon has publicly urged both parties in Montreal and British Columbia to return to the negotiating table, stressing the need for an immediate resolution.
Impact on Supply Chains
