Labour Tensions at the Port of Montreal Impacting Trade

October 9, 2024. We are closely monitoring developments at the Port of Montreal, where labour tensions have heightened. The Longshoremen’s Union has issued an overtime strike notice set to begin at 7 a.m. on October 10 and continue indefinitely. This action follows a recent three-day strike, which affected operations at two terminals of the busy seaport.

Port of Montreal Labour Dispute Escalates

The Canadian Maritime Employers Association (MEA) has requested that the Union withdraw the strike notice, describing it as a “pressure tactic.” The MEA emphasized that the complete cessation of overtime would significantly impact port operations, as incomplete shifts could lead to operational slowdowns or complete halts. In response, the MEA announced that employees on shifts with incomplete crews will not be compensated.

Negotiations to renew the collective agreement for longshoremen have been ongoing for over a year, with issues centered on pay disputes and working conditions. The MEA underscored that these persistent disputes have taken a toll on both the Québec and Canadian economies, with a notable decline in cargo volumes at the port resulting in financial strain for the Association.
