An update has been received that the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Aluminum Import License program requirement will go into effect on June 28, 2021. The requirement was previously scheduled for March 29, 2021, after being delayed from the original date of January 25, 2021.
Items on the list of aluminum products subject to the new requirement will require a license for each entry. The list is available here: https://www.trade.gov/aluminum-products-hts-codes
The aluminum import license number obtained from Commerce for each shipment, as well as the License Type Code 28, must be reported on the corresponding entry summary or electronic equivalent in ACE.
Preregistration for this licensing system opened on January 4, 2021, at https://www.trade.gov/aluminum and the U.S. Department of Commerce advises that importers, brokers and other license applicants will need to register for an account in order to create a license. Additionally, this new aluminum license system will use the same platform as the steel licensing system (SIMA), so users with an existing steel license account do not need to create new accounts.
